Executive Producer Lorne Michaels has passed away unexpectedly — and with him, the singular vision that built Saturday Night Live from a late-night experiment into an American institution. Now, the cast is restless, NBC is circling, sponsors are getting nervous, and the clock is ticking toward the delayed Season 52 premiere on October 24.

The SNL Emergency Executive Council has been convened to determine the future trajectory of the storied sketch comedy show. Inside Studio 8H, every faction has an agenda: protect the legacy, modernize the format, cut the losses, or burn it all down and start over. The writers' room is a war zone. The network execs want answers.

And the public is asking a question nobody wants to answer out loud — has America finally outgrown Saturday Night Live?
